New Year’s Eve in Florence with the Ukraine Philharmonic Orchestra

The stage will be set under the Loggia dei Lanzi, where the Philharmonic Orchestra Ukraine, conducted by Giuseppe Lanzetta, director of the “Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina”, greets the new year on waltzer and polkas notes and arias of famous artist as Johann Strauss (father and son), Rossini, Ponchielli, Bizet, Offenbach, Khachaturian, Brahms.

The Philharmonic Orchestra Ukraine is one of the most important of his country and appreciated by critics and audiences in the West. It collaborates with famous conductors and great soloists like Simonov, Kandrashin, Turchak, Ivanov, Petrov, Simenov and many others.

A suggestive setting, where the Orchestra will be perform, an unusual and fascinating place to spend one of the most magical nights of the year that not to be missed.

Artusi Week in Florence

This year occurs the centenary of the death of Pellegrino Artusi, known in Italy and around the world as the father of modern Italian cuisine and author of the famous book “La scienza in cucina e l’arte del mangiar bene” (The science of cooking and the art of eating well). Published for the first time in 1891 came to the 130th edition and has also contributed to the unification of the language, as well as gastronomic.

During the celebrations for the centenary of the death, the town of Florence, where Artusi lived for 60 years, together with the Tuscany Region, has decided to make a tribute to his figure with various initiatives that have been registered throughout 2011.

The last appointment of this celebrations will be held in Florence with the “Artusi Week”, from 5th  to 13th November, during which will be organized food and wine initiatives dedicated to him. In collaboration with hotels and associations will be organized guided tours to museums to the discovery of “Tavole imbandite” (dinner tables) and cooking classes dedicated to the great master of the kitchen. On this occasion you will be able to taste dishes inspired by the work of Pellegrino Artusi, proposed by many restaurants of Florence, participate to wine tasting, attend a cooking class for women, and more other initiatives. There will also be workshops and a theater show dedicated to the figure of Artusi.

Firenze - estateFor those who will spend the 15th August 2011 in Florence the city will offer many opportunities for fun and relaxation, together with many cultural initiatives.

First, at the Fortezza da Basso will be the final evening of the Fortress Summer 2011, the Summer Festival in Florence dedicated to music, culture, theater, literature. The evening of 15th August will be accompanied with the alternative Latin rock Belgrave at the space “Piazza Puccini” and also wiht the screening of “August Holidays ” by Paolo Virzì at the Lorraine Quarter Courtyard.

For gourmets, however, the “Taste of Square” near the Piazzale Michelangelo is the appointment with the “Fish Festival”: a menu of simple dishes and ingredients carefully selected and based on the season. This is one of the many festivals, like the bruschetta or the porcini mushrooms, which happens to Piazzale Taste of Florence during the summer: a sort of “permante festival” of Tuscan flavors.

For lovers of art and culture, Florence is always full of surprises, even in August. At the Museo degli Argenti in Palazzo Pitti, visit the exhibition “Treasury of the Kremlin”: more than 100 exhibits from the prestigious Moscow Kremlin Museum, the richest collection of the oldest Russian museum, which includes the crown jewels and some objects related to the court of the biggest names Tsar of Russia.

Mostra Rabarama Giardino BoboliAt the  Boboli Gardens you can find the personal exhibition of Paola Epifani (aka Rabarama) - Body in Art and Performance Art – titled “ANTICOnforme”. The exhibition presents forty works in white Carrara marble and painted bronze, all large,  scattered, as well as in the Boboli Gardens, between the park of the Royal Mews, straws and Piazza Pitti.

Finally, in the heart of the Uffizi in Florence, also in August will open the exhibition “Vasari, the Uffizi Gallery and the Duke”, which presents the progressive construction of structures that Cosimo I had imagined as the site for so-called Courts and Arts.

Feast of St. Anne in Florence

Festa Sant'Anna FirenzeFor the third consecutive year on July 26th 2011 the City of Florence celebrates the Feast of St. Anne.

The program provides at 20.30 a representation Parade of the Republic (100 listed) that will start from the palace of the Guelphs, and will head towards Piazza Signoria, where it will join the Gonfalone of Florence.

The procession will then proceed to the Cathedral, where candles will be delivered by the Florentine Madonnas, in homage to the relics of St. Anne. After the ceremony, the procession will head in Orsanmichele Giani where the commissioner will give a lecture on the history of St. Anne, in memory of the expulsion of the Athen’s leader, which occurred July 26th 1343, after a long year of tyranny suffered by Florentines.

From that year the July 26th became the day of the popular uprising of Florence: Saint Anne was proclaimed protector of the freedom of the city. The Signoria commissioned to put in a wooden altar in Orsanmichele to expose  “an image of St. Anne”: it was first painted in the late fourteenth century, then carved in wood.

The procession of the Feast of St. Anne will follow this path: the Guelph palace, Via Porta Rossa and Via Porta Santa Maria, Via Vacchereccia, Piazza Signoria, Via Calzaiuoli Cathedral. From the cathedral the procession will move along in Orsanmichele, via Calzaiuoli, Via degli Speziali, Piazza della Repubblica, Via Calimala.
