Della Robbia, ceramics from Florence
In a corner of Via del Proconsolo, there is a shop specializing in Florentine ceramics. This shop offers its custumers spendid reproduction of Renaissance items, in particular Della Robbia Madonnas or classical grotesque from Montelupo.
Established in 1904, up to the 1966 flood they also sold bronze, marble and alabaster items that were unfortunately losto in the disaster.
The shop is included in the complex of the church Badia Fiorentina, built in 978 by Hugh Marquis of Tuscany.
The name Della Robbia comes from the tradition begun in 1400 by Luke, a former pupil of Donatello, who founded the family business specializing in the technique of polychrome glazed terracotta and thanks to which he opened a profitable shop in Florence.
Entirely hand made and painted, these beautiful pieces really brighten up any environment and make for a perfect souvenir – whether for every day use of just to decorate your walls. Typical Florentine designs usually involve images of the countryside, grapes, leaves and Tuscan nature scenes with yellow being a predominant color, reminiscent of the sunflowers spotted all over the Tuscan hills.
