In Florence, the discovery of a lost masterpiece: the Battaglia di Anghiari by Leonardo

02 Apr 2012

Battaglia di Anghiari - Leonardo da VinciA discovery discussed by the most experts of art and restoration that of the fresco that Leonardo has painted in one of the two walls of the Salone del Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

This is the Battaglia di Anghiari, commissioned to Leonardo da Vinci in 1500, remained unfinished because of the inadequacy of the techniques used to paint the wall, and covered, years later, by the expert hands of another great painter, Giorgio Vasari, who Cosimo I de’ Medici asked to fresco the whole hall.

The results of the research conducted by a team of National Geographic, guided by Maurizio Seracini, engineer and professor at the University of San Diego in California, in collaboration with the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence, seem to confirm the presence of pigments behind the fresco of Vasari.

The black pigment, that for its composition, can be traced back to the Mona Lisa of Leonardo, the other traces of red lacquer, a beige coat and the presence of a vacuum behind the wall painted by Vasari confirm the hypothesis that there are remains of the Battaglia di Anghiari of Leonardo.

For this, the major of Florence, Matteo Renzi, wants find an agreement with the minister of culture, Lorenzo Ornaghi, to carry on the researches.

An incredible discovery that shall bring back one of the most important works of Leonardo. If you would like to attend this discovery, come to Florence and book a room in one of the hotels of Ars Hotels chain, in the heart of Florence.
