From 1997, the year of the VII° hundredth anniversary of Cathedral’s foundation, Florence commemorates a unique and characteristic tradition, Three Kings day. Christian calendar consecrate January 6th – twelfth day after Christmas – to adoration of the Magi; tradition tells that the Three Wise Men came to pay tribute to Jesus, Messiah and son of God, on this day.
This year the same extraordinary event will take place again: Magi will head the cortège, followed by 700 walkers-on, will leave from Pitti square at 2 PM, recalling le famous riding of the Three Wise Men. Moreover, many delegates of some ethnic communities will take part to the show, wearing their traditional outfits.
During XV° century Magi Company (or “The star”, referring to the guide star) organized a solemn cortège with the intent to commemorate the event narrated on Gospel. The first mention of this episode was in a document of 1417 which testifies how Florence Republic decided to grant Magi Company. Besides, there is Benozzo Gozzoli’s fresco painting, commissioned by Cosimo I De Medici, representing Magi and proving Medici’s love for this public performance.
If you love magical Christmas atmosphere you can’t miss this extraordinary cortège, which will allow you to discover Florence, perhaps staying overnight in the historical centre of the city with Ars Hotels.
