Florence turns off its monuments for the Earth Hour
Appointment to 31th march 2012 with the Earth Hour. Even this year many of the main Italian cities, including Florence, but also many small towns have rallied to the initiative promoted by the WWF to sensitize public awareness about climate change and sustainable future.
The Earth Hour will go around the world, and from 20:30 to 21:30 many of the major monuments will turn off. Only in the city of Florence will be involved 7 symbol monuments to the initiative: Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo and theBaptistery, the Palazzo della Regione Toscana at Novoli, Palazzo Strozzi Socrati and the new entry, the Abbey of S.Miniato.
Not only the city, but also shops, restaurant and private homes will participate to the project and for the occasion will be organized dinners by candlelight, events in the square and a spectacular night of stargazing. Thanks to the Sportello Eco Equo of Florence, in collaboration with the Astrophysical Observatory of Arcetri, the WWF and the Astronomical Society of Florence (SAF) that will make available its astronomical telescopes, all citizens will can enjoy the sky and realize how would be our sky if it aren’t obscured by light pollution.
Many testimonials have decided to support the initiative, including singers as Marco Mengoni, Elisa and Nicolò Fabi and sport figures as Massimiliano Rosolino, Francesco Totti and the italian national rugby team.
